Hemant Khandelwal

State President, Bharatiya Janata Party — Madhya Pradesh.
Member, Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly for Betul.

Four decades of public life in one district, and a party organisation across fifty-five. A record built in Betul — in the Lok Sabha, in the State Assembly and in the party's own machinery — and now carried to the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Madhya Pradesh.

Introduction

A public life measured in one constituency — and one organisation.

Hemant Khandelwal entered electoral politics in 2008, in a by-election held after the death of his father, Vijay Kumar Khandelwal, who had represented Betul in the Lok Sabha for four consecutive terms. He has contested from Betul ever since.

The arc is unusually consistent for Indian public life. Rather than moving between seats or between levels of government, Khandelwal has worked the same ground repeatedly: a Lok Sabha term from 2008 to 2009, the district presidency of the party from 2010 to 2013, the Betul seat in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 2013 to 2018, and the same seat again from 2023. Between those two Assembly terms he served as treasurer of the state unit and took on organisational assignments outside the state.

That combination — a legislator who has also run the party's accounts, its district structure and its election management — is what the party drew on when it chose its state president in 2025. He was elected unopposed on 2 July, taking charge at the state headquarters in Bhopal.

Areas of work

Three strands run through the record.

Representation
of Betul

Betul has been the constant. Khandelwal has represented the district in the Lok Sabha and, across two separate terms, in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly — returning to the seat in 2023 after losing it in 2018.

Party
organisation

District president, state treasurer, and organiser of election management — roles that sit inside the machinery rather than in front of it. His work on establishing district party offices across the state belongs to this strand.

Enterprise and
the rural economy

Outside politics he is a businessman with interests in dairy, agriculture and agro products — a background that has informed his engagement with the cooperative dairy sector in Madhya Pradesh.
